I had the good fortune to work for Bill Collings when I first moved to Austin, TX. I sent the company an email having never heard but only heard of the quality of the instruments the produced, explaining that while I had never worked with wood and had never built anything, I was a fast learner and anxious to be involved in any way I could, if that meant sweeping floors and emptying garbage cans, I would do it happily. Bill and Steve (who manages the business aspect of things) told me to come in as soon as I got to Texas and we could talk about it. They gave me a job and taught me how to bend wood to make the sides of a guitar, how to make and instal kerfing and bracing, and how to use a chisel properly. I was easily the least talented guy in the building, but they worked with me and showed me how to do things I would have never learned and thus never gained a proper appreciation for, and I got to do it on the most beautiful, perfect sounding acoustic guitars in the world. I will forever be indebted to Collings Guitars for taking their time and giving me a chance to learn, and someday I will own several of these instruments.
